Nidaa Tounes (نداء تونس - Tunisia's Call) was recognized as a political party
by the Tunisian government on 6 July 2012, following the Tunisia's Call issued
on 20 April 2012 by Béji Caïd Essebsi (1926-2019), Prime Minister after the 2011
Jasmine Revolution and organizer of the Constituent Assembly.
In the 2014
presidential election, Béji Caïd Essebsi, the most voted candidate (1,289;384
votes; 39.5%) in the first round, was elected President of the Republic
(1,731,529 votes; 55.7%) in the second round. In the general election that
followed, Nidaa Tounes, presented as the main opponent to Islamism, was the most
voted party (1,279,941 votes; 27.6% of the votes, securing 86 out of the 217
seats at the Assembly of People's Representatives and defeating Ennahdha (27.8%,
69 seats), which had won the 2011 election.
Nidaa Tounes' success induced
a crisis inside the party. There were big quarrels about Béji Caïd Essebsi's
succession as the party's leader and the opportunity to set up a government
alliance with Ennahdha. Hafedh Caïd Essebsi, Béji Caïd Essebsi's son, was
appointed Executive Director of the party during the congress held in Sousse on
10 January 2015. Several members left Nidaa Tounes to found new parties, in a
never-ending split process. For a while, two clans claimed leadership over Nidaa
Tounes, which was eventually granted by the court to the Essebsi clan.
In
the first round of the presidential election held the same year, the party's
candidate, Abdelkrim Zbidi, was only the fourth most voted candidate (361,864
votes; 10.7%) and could not advance to the second round. In the general election
that followed, Nidaa Tounes obtained only 43,213 votes (1.5%; 13th most voted
party) in the 2019 general elections, securing only 3 seats.
